Planned Improvements
Planned improvements associated with the Jughandle Project include but are not limited to the
following:
- Realignment of Washington Street and Clackamas River
Drive to cross under Hwy 213 at a new bridge located between the existing Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) bridge and the Hwy
213/Washington Street/Clackamas River Drive signalized intersection.
- Construction of a new bridge on Hwy 213 just south of the existing UPRR bridge to accommodate the Washington Street
roadway realignment/highway underpass.
- The existing Washington
Street and Clackamas River Drive street connections will be modified to connect Hwy 213 with the realigned Washington Street
and Clackamas River Drive.
- New!
Widen and restripe Redland Road to create a dedicated right turn lane and two left turn lanes to Highway 213.
- The improvements for the roadway realignment, new bridge, and street connection modifications
combine to create an intersection configuration - namely a “Jughandle” - that eliminates left turns and east-west
cross movements at the existing Hwy 213/Washington Street/Clackamas River Drive signalized intersection, reducing the number
of signal phases from eight to two.
- Roadway widening and channelization
changes on Hwy 213 to accommodate three travel lanes in each direction and right-turn lanes both southbound (SB) and northbound
(NB) at the Jughandle intersection.
- Channelization modifications
to allow for the addition of a third NB lane between the UPRR Bridge and I-205 NB ramps, and eliminate left turns and cross
movements at the NB I-205 ramp terminals. Channelization modifications include striping changes, installation of a concrete
median barrier, and alterations to concrete islands.
- Rail
retrofits to the UPRR bridge and the I-205 bridge to increase the safety of these structures.
